State of NGOs by Province

Ever wondered how many NGOs are registered in South Africa The chart below gives a comprehensive summary of the number of NGOs per province by sector.

It is plain to see that Gauteng has by far the largest number of NGOs. Considering that Gauteng is the economic hub of the country one would expect most of the NGOs to be located in the poorer provinces.

Social Services seem to be the predominant sector for NGOs. Go ahead explore the data. Data sourced from Non Profit Organisations1.

Time to start a business

One of the interesting statistics kept by the World Bank is called, "Time to start a business (days)"1. This statistic needs no further explanation and the figures show that South Africa as been improving in this aspect over the years.

This means that it will take one less than a month to get a business going in South Africa. In a follow up post we are going to compare this statistic with the same statistic from different countries. For now, stop thinking about starting that business and get on with it.

Population

The most common statistic to which findings are related to is the population.

1

Data is much easier to understand when dealing with actual numbers rather than ratios. For example statisticians will say something along the lines of 2 in 10 people in South Africa are infected with the HIV virus. This does not mean much until one applies the ratio to the population of the country. The population of South Africa is estimated at 47 million, hence 2 in 10 roughly means a possible 9.4 million people are infected with the HIV virus.

Race dominates many discussions in South Africa. Many other statistics will be compared to the number of black people. Often politicians state that 80% of the economy is controlled by 10% of the population. For once the politicians are right when quoting the population breakdown. Below is the racial breakdown of the population.

An interesting point on population covered is the migration of individuals. Some provinces are losing people and one wonders whether it is skilled on unskilled individuals. Gauteng seems the most attractive province to which to move.

Finally the number of immigrants in South Africa is something that must be factored in the population. Many different publications quote different figures. The numbers range from several hundred thousand to 3 million. The latter being pretty significant.

South African Elections 2009

The elections have come and gone but the results affect the manner in which the country is governed today. It is thus a befitting gesture to use the national elections as the opening post on Infossist.co.za.

There was much fanfare in the elections, many accusations, grandstanding and many questions on the integrity of some of the party leaders. In the end though the African National Congress (ANC), the party most associated with the liberation of South Africa from apartheid came out with a near two thirds majority.

The only province the ANC did not win was the Western Cape. Besides the highly publicised infighting within the Western Cape ANC branches, the unique racial profile of the Western Cape may have contributed to the results. There is a great similarity between the provincial and national results. In fact it is hard to tell which set of results one is looking at. Below are the provincial results. Once again the only exception to ANC domination was the Western Cape.
